buffer.c in named in ISC BIND 9.x before 9.9.7-P3 and 9.10.x before 9.10.2-P4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) by creating a zone containing a malformed DNSSEC key and issuing a query for a name in that zone. ISC BIND is a set of open source software that implements the DNS protocol maintained by the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) company in the United States. A security vulnerability exists in the buffer.c file in named in versions 9.x prior to ISC BIND 9.9.7-P3 and 9.10.x prior to 9.10.2-P4. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512

============================================================================= FreeBSD-SA-15:23.bind Security Advisory The FreeBSD Project
Topic: BIND remote denial of service vulnerability
Category: contrib Module: bind Announced: 2015-09-02 Credits: ISC Affects: FreeBSD 9.x Corrected: 2015-09-02 20:06:46 UTC (stable/9, 9.3-STABLE) 2015-09-02 20:07:03 UTC (releng/9.3, 9.3-RELEASE-p25) CVE Name: CVE-2015-5722
For general information regarding FreeBSD Security Advisories,
including descriptions of the fields above, security branches, and the
following sections, please visit
II.
III.
Recursive servers are at greatest risk, however, an authoritative server could also be affected, if an attacker controls a zone that the server must query against to perform its zone service.
IV. Workaround
No workaround is available, but hosts not running named(8) are not vulnerable.
V. Solution
Perform one of the following:
1) Upgrade your vulnerable system to a supported FreeBSD stable or release / security branch (releng) dated after the correction date. A reboot is recommended but not required.
2) To update your vulnerable system via a binary patch:
Systems running a RELEASE version of FreeBSD on the i386 or amd64 platforms can be updated via the freebsd-update(8) utility:
freebsd-update fetch
freebsd-update install
The named service has to be restarted after the update. A reboot is recommended but not required.
3) To update your vulnerable system via a source code patch:
The following patches have been verified to apply to the applicable FreeBSD release branches.
a) Download the relevant patch from the location below, and verify the detached PGP signature using your PGP utility.
[FreeBSD 9.3]
fetch https://security.FreeBSD.org/patches/SA-15:23/bind.patch
fetch https://security.FreeBSD.org/patches/SA-15:23/bind.patch.asc
gpg --verify bind.patch.asc
Please note that FreeBSD 9.3-STABLE is also affected by another issue (CVE-2015-5986), and a different patch should be used.
b) Apply the patch. Execute the following commands as root:
cd /usr/src
patch < /path/to/patch
c) Recompile the operating system using buildworld and installworld as
described in
Restart the named(8) daemon, or reboot the system.
VI. Correction details
The following list contains the correction revision numbers for each affected branch.
Branch/path Revision
stable/9/ r287409 releng/9.3/ r287410
To see which files were modified by a particular revision, run the following command, replacing NNNNNN with the revision number, on a machine with Subversion installed:
svn diff -cNNNNNN --summarize svn://svn.freebsd.org/base
Or visit the following URL, replacing NNNNNN with the revision number:

- Description:
The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) is an implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols. BIND includes a DNS server (named); a resolver library (routines for applications to use when interfacing with DNS); and tools for verifying that the DNS server is operating correctly.
A denial of service flaw was found in the way BIND parsed certain malformed DNSSEC keys. (CVE-2015-5722)
Red Hat would like to thank ISC for reporting this issue. Upstream acknowledges Hanno Böck as the original reporter.
All bind users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a backported patch to correct this issue. After installing the update, the BIND daemon (named) will be restarted automatically.
- Solution:
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied.

The libdns\nlibrary is a library of DNS protocol support functions. \n\nII. \n\nIII. \n\nRecursive servers are at greatest risk, however, an authoritative server\ncould also be affected, if an attacker controls a zone that the server\nmust query against to perform its zone service. \n\nIV. Workaround\n\nNo workaround is available, but hosts not running named(8) are not\nvulnerable. \n\nV. Solution\n\nPerform one of the following:\n\n1) Upgrade your vulnerable system to a supported FreeBSD stable or\nrelease / security branch (releng) dated after the correction date. A reboot is\nrecommended but not required. \n\n2) To update your vulnerable system via a binary patch:\n\nSystems running a RELEASE version of FreeBSD on the i386 or amd64\nplatforms can be updated via the freebsd-update(8) utility:\n\n# freebsd-update fetch\n# freebsd-update install\n\nThe named service has to be restarted after the update. A reboot is\nrecommended but not required. \n\n3) To update your vulnerable system via a source code patch:\n\nThe following patches have been verified to apply to the applicable\nFreeBSD release branches. \n\na) Download the relevant patch from the location below, and verify the\ndetached PGP signature using your PGP utility. \n\n[FreeBSD 9.3]\n# fetch https://security.FreeBSD.org/patches/SA-15:23/bind.patch\n# fetch https://security.FreeBSD.org/patches/SA-15:23/bind.patch.asc\n# gpg --verify bind.patch.asc\n\nPlease note that FreeBSD 9.3-STABLE is also affected by another issue\n(CVE-2015-5986), and a different patch should be used. \n\nb) Apply the patch. Execute the following commands as root:\n\n# cd /usr/src\n# patch \u003c /path/to/patch\n\nc) Recompile the operating system using buildworld and installworld as\ndescribed in \u003cURL:https://www.FreeBSD.org/handbook/makeworld.html\u003e. \n\nRestart the named(8) daemon, or reboot the system. \n\nVI. Description:\n\nThe Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) is an implementation of the Domain\nName System (DNS) protocols. BIND includes a DNS server (named); a resolver\nlibrary (routines for applications to use when interfacing with DNS); and\ntools for verifying that the DNS server is operating correctly. \n\nA denial of service flaw was found in the way BIND parsed certain malformed\nDNSSEC keys. (CVE-2015-5722)\n\nRed Hat would like to thank ISC for reporting this issue. Upstream\nacknowledges Hanno B\u00f6ck as the original reporter. \n\nAll bind users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which\ncontain a backported patch to correct this issue. After installing the\nupdate, the BIND daemon (named) will be restarted automatically. \n\n4. Solution:\n\nBefore applying this update, make sure all previously released errata\nrelevant to your system have been applied. \n\nFor details on how to apply this update, refer to:\n\nhttps://access.redhat.com/articles/11258\n\n5.
